Mandate & Objectives
The role of the office of the Director General Health
Services is key to the effective functioning of the health
sector. All the policies and guidelines for provision of
care, including the standards to be adhered to areas such as
laboratory, pharmaceuticals, radiology, physiotherapy etc
are all under the management and coordination of the
Director General. Even before treatment policies can be sent
to external endorsing forums, they have to be endorsed by
the office of the Director General. This office, with advice
from the relevant departments sets clinical standards in
terms of the caliber of medical doctors imported into the
country. It is also responsible for providing support to
medical doctors working in the Ministry by assessing and
monitoring their performance and taking corrective action
where necessary. In the effort to set and maintain
established standards, this office is supported by the
office of the chief nursing officer whose role is to
coordinate nursing services in the country. Together this
two offices ensure that all clinical and supportive
departments work together to facilitate delivery of
acceptable quality health services.
The office of
the Director General also has the important function of
providing technical advice to the Principal Secretary and
Honourable Minister on matters related to national health
policies and strategies as well as collaboration with
international agencies working with the health sector.
