Mandate & Objectives
The role of the office of the Director General Health Services is key to the effective functioning of the health sector. All the policies and guidelines for provision of care, including the standards to be adhered to areas such as laboratory, pharmaceuticals, radiology, physiotherapy etc are all under the management and coordination of the Director General. Even before treatment policies can be sent to external endorsing forums, they have to be endorsed by the office of the Director General. This office, with advice from the relevant departments sets clinical standards in terms of the caliber of medical doctors imported into the country. It is also responsible for providing support to medical doctors working in the Ministry by assessing and monitoring their performance and taking corrective action where necessary. In the effort to set and maintain established standards, this office is supported by the office of the chief nursing officer whose role is to coordinate nursing services in the country. Together this two offices ensure that all clinical and supportive departments work together to facilitate delivery of acceptable quality health services.

The office of the Director General also has the important function of providing technical advice to the Principal Secretary and Honourable Minister on matters related to national health policies and strategies as well as collaboration with international agencies working with the health sector.
