National Drug Supply Organisation |
The NDSO was
established in 1979 as a trading account and department
under the Ministry of Health & Social Welfare. From
inception the NDSO was managed by the Lesotho Pharmaceutical
Corporation (LPC) under management contracts with the
Ministry. To improve efficiency and effectiveness of the
NDSO, in 1999 the NDSO was de-inked from the LPC. The
mandate of the NDSO is closely liked to the mission of the
Ministry of Health & Social Welfare in that it aims to
promote the health of the people of Lesotho by developing
and implementing equitable and reliable systems for
procurement, storage and distribution of acceptable quality
of drugs and medical supplies to all health institutions at
the lowest possible price. The mandate of the NDSO has since
extended to other stakeholders within the country, including
private practitioners.
The NDSO is currently accountable to the National Drug
Service Committee which is chaired by the Principal
Secretary of the Ministry. The mandate of NDSO has become
increasingly complex with the advent of HIV and the need to
procure and store AIDS drugs, condoms and home-based care
kits. The NDSO has benefited from the government through a
World Bank Capacity building project based in the Ministry
of Health & Social welfare. This project is geared towards
national capacity for implementation of the Global fund
strategies, including building the technical capacity of
NDSO as well as construction of adequate storage space and
equipment.
