Mandate & Objectives
The goal of the Pharmacy department is to ensure that
medicines of good quality are available at affordable cost
to all those who are in need. To this end the department has
initiated processes for the establishment of a Drug
Regulatory Authority that will facilitate inspection of
drugs and quality assurance; developed a drug policy which
outlines procedures for management and use of drugs at all
the levels of the health system. Also as an attempt to
streamline management, an essential drug list has been
defined and prescription guidelines developed in line with
the national treatment guidelines. Within the department is
the Health Product Coordinating Office which collaborates
with the National Drug Supply Organisation and the National
AIDS Secretariat to coordinate procurement and supply chain
of anti-retrovirals. This unit also monitors use of these
drugs and maintains a database of people receiving anti-retrovirals.
Some of the
challenges facing the department include shortages of
qualified staff, particularly at the district level. The
department provides supervision and facilitates training for
staff at the HSA and district levels.
