Mandate & Objectives
The mandate of this department is to coordinate mental
health services in the country to ensure effective mental
health curative and preventive interventions for all those
in need. The department of mental health is located within
the Mohlomi Hospital though a clinic is run within the QEII
compound. The key mandate of this department is to develop
and supervise implementation of national mental health
policies and guidelines which are used not only by
government facilities but also by CHAL health facilities. In
addition, the mental health department identifies needs and
facilitates training for the HSA level. Within the
department there is also a community mental health unit
which strengthens and supervises community based mental
health structures and promotes health education in
preventive and rehabilitative mental health services. Mental
health services have benefited from a significant resource
boost under the health sector reform programme under which
new units within the department and continued training for
various mental health cadres are planned currently underway.
